Things to arrange after your arrival

This article only applies for Short Stay. Click here to find more information about the difference between Long Stay and Short Stay housing.

Once you’ve moved in, there are a few important things to check and arrange to make sure everything is in order. Please follow the steps below shortly after arrival:

Step 1: check the cleaning of your room.
We’ve cleaned your room before your arrival. Not satisfied? Email us at info@sshxl.nl within 24 hours and include pictures.
Note for Rotterdam tenants: contact the cleaning company directly. Details are on the door hanger in your room.

Step 2: check your inventory and report damages

  • Inventory checklist: fill out the inventory checklist form within five days after your arrival. We will gather this information and will bring or replace the missing/damaged inventory in the weeks after.
  • Other damages: any damages other than your inventory? Please let us know via My SSH, tab 'Repair request'.

Reporting issues early ensures you won’t be held responsible at the end of your stay.

Step 3: check your bedding package
Did you order a bedding package? Check if you have received one. Good to know: the pillow is wrapped inside the blanket.

Step 4: connect to the wifi
Connection details can be found at My SSH (tab 'My accommodation'). If you're having trouble, visit this page for tips and contact information.

Step 5: make an appointment to register with the municipality
You need a physical copy of your rental agreement; it's a legal document, even without any physical signatures. Note that registration is obligated in the Netherlands if you are staying here for longer than three months.

Someone else is registered at my address

If the previous tenant is still registered at your address, then you may face issues with registering at the Municipality or when you try to apply for rental allowance. In case this happens, you can contact us, and we will get in touch with the previous tenant to request them to deregister from your address.

Is the tap water drinkable?

Yes, it is! You can drink the water from the kitchen and bathroom safely.

Where can I buy a bike?

In the Netherlands, everyone loves to cycle! Do you want to buy a bike? You could try a second hand bike shop in the city, or go to Swapfiets.nl and rent a bike for a couple of months.

Is there a deposit on cans?

Yes, in the Netherlands you pay €0,10 - €0,25 deposit on cans and (beer)bottles. So, please don't throw them away, but hand them in at any supermarket instead!

How can I travel by public transport?

In the Netherlands we have two common types of cards to travel with public transport:

    • Using your debit or credit card, this is the easiest option.More information about this can be read here.
    • Using a Dutch public transport card (OV-chipkaart) – Please note that you can only buy this card if you already live in the Netherlands.

I receive mail from previous tenants

If you receive mail from the previous occupants, it's best to return the mail to the sender. We do not forward mail to the previous resident. You can follow the steps below to return the mail: 1) cross out the address details, 2) write ‘Recipient unknown - Return to sender' on the envelope, 3) place the mail in the nearest mailbox, a postage stamp is not required.
