This article only applies to Short Stay. Click here to find more information about the difference between Long Stay and Short Stay housing.
When can I register for Short Stay?
Registration is only possible during specific time periods. Once confirmed by the educational institutions, we'll share registration and booking dates on our website. For fall semester bookings, look out for the announcement of dates in April or May. Spring semester details will be announced in October or November. If you register too early (for the wrong period) you will not be approved by your university.

(How) can I register for Short Stay?
Several (educational) institutions reserve Short Stay accommodation with the SSH specifically for their international students and (in some cities) their staff.
Step 1: check if your university is listed
Check whether your (educational) institution reserves Short Stay accommodation. On the university pages, you will find specific information about the student complexes, important dates, rental periods (Fall Semester, Spring Semester or Full Year) and rental conditions. If your university is not listed, unfortunately you're not eligible to rent Short Stay accommodation with us.
Step 2: register for Short Stay
On the university page you can see when you are able to book. The exact dates for registration and bookings will be announced on our website. It is not possible to register before the announced dates, since the option(s) will not be visible on the registration form. Here you can register for Short Stay. Registration is furthermore free! After registration, please note that you cannot use a Short Stay registration for Long Stay housing and vice versa.
Step 3: confirm you registration
After completing the registration form on our website, you need to confirm your account. A confirmation email will be sent to the email address you provided during registration. Once you have confirmed, you can log in to your account. Upon logging in, you will notice that your Short Stay registration is marked as 'for approval.' This indicates that your registration has been automatically sent to your university. Now, all you have to do is wait for further updates.
Step 4: get approved
As soon as your university has checked your registration, you’ll automatically receive a message. This usually takes a few working days. Sometimes, it's necessary to edit your details. If your university's check is taking longer than three working days, we advise you to contact the university directly and ask them why your registration has not yet been reviewed. Unfortunately we cannot help you get your registration approved; that is something only universities can do.
Step 5: try to book a room!
After approval, you can try to book a room on the booking day. The exact opening date and time for bookings depends on your educational institution. Please check our universities page to find your institution and take a look at the booking period. Please note that the rooms are booked on 'first-come-first-serve' principle. There are (many) more approved students than rental offers. We cannot guarantee you'll be able to book a room.

Is there an age limit?
There's no minimum or maximum age to register for Short Stay at the SSH! However, please note that in some instances, your (educational) institution has set up an age restriction. If you want to make sure whether you are eligible for Short Stay due to your age, it's best to contact your (educational) institution to verify this. By the way, if you are planning to register for Long Stay as well, you cannot be older than 27.
My registration is not approved. Why not?
We cannot give you more detailed information on the reason for your non-approval. This is done by your contact person at the (educational) institution, outside the influence of the SSH. The reason they gave us, has automatically been copied in the email you received. If you have further questions about the non-approval of your educational institution, please contact your contact person at the university. If you have edited your registration, the application will be automatically sent to the educational institution again for review. Below you can find how to contact your (educational) institution:

I accidentally registered for the wrong period.
If you have registered for the wrong period, then most likely your educational institution will not approve you. Don't worry, you do not have to delete your account. If your preferred period is not open for registration yet, then you must wait until the form opens. If the registration period is open, you can log in to your My SSH page and click on 'edit registration' and correct the not approved registration. After sending the details, your registration will be 'for approval' again.
I have accidentally registered for Long Stay through ROOM.nl
Long stay registration through ROOM requires a fee of €35, while Short Stay registration is free. In most situations, finding a room in long stay offer is pretty much impossible as it requires you to have enough registration time to receive an invitation for an introduction night. For most long stay rooms, you’re required to have at least 24 months of registration time.
You can delete your ROOM registration if you haven’t applied for any rooms yet, within 2 weeks of your registration by contacting info@room.nl.
What's the status of my registration?
After registration, you can see the status of your application on your My SSH page. There are different statuses when you have registered:
- For approval: your educational institution (still) needs to review your application.
- On hold: your educational institution has paused your application, and you have received a message about this change of status.
- Approved: your educational institution has approved you and you can try to book a room on the booking day.
- Not approved: your educational institution has not approved your registration, and you have received a message about this change of status.
