Registration for Long Stay

This article only applies for Long Stay. Click here to find more information about the difference between Long Stay and Short Stay housing.

What does it cost?

You can register with the SSH via the national registration platform ROOM. There's a one-time registration fee of €35. ROOM is  an initiative of social student housing providers. Together, we rent out over 50,000 affordable student rooms in more than 10 cities. When you decide to register with ROOM, you will be registered with all other affiliated student housing providers - including the SSH.

From what age can I register?

You can register from your 16th birthday onwards. This means you do not have to be studying yet when you register with ROOM. In fact, it is wise to register even if you are not yet studying; that way, you can already build up some registration time while you are still at school. We do not make any exceptions to the age limit for early learners or other pupils who start their studies earlier.

Up to what age can I register?

At ROOM, there's no maximum registration age. The age up to which you are allowed to rent your current SSH accommodation, depends on until what age you are studying and/or what your income is.

Do I have to study in the city where I'm living?

For the SSH, you don't necessarily have to study in the city where you're going to live. Other rules apply to other student housing providers affiliated to ROOM.

In which cities is the SSH located?

The SSH is located in Utrecht (including Zeist), Rotterdam, Zwolle and Tilburg. We also offer accommodation in Groningen, but this is for University College Groningen students and PhD students only. However, with your ROOM registration, you can also apply for offers from other student housing providers, including in Amsterdam, Delft, Leiden and Wageningen. During your registration, we'll ask to indicate where you expect to live. After completing your registration, you are more than welcome to apply to accommodation in other cities as well - your answer here won’t cause you any limitations. Please keep in mind that you need registration time for the SSH cities to be invited to an introduction night or viewing.

Will my registration time continue while living at the SSH?

Your registration time will continue even when you rent a room with us.

Can I also register if I'm studying at the MBO or part-time?

Yes, you can also register with ROOM as an MBO or part-time student! Please note that when allocating accommodation, we ask for proof of income. In contrast to full-time students, we cannot assume that you earn less than 51,537 euros (income limit 2026) per year for MBO and part-time students.

What are the requirements for my (future) educational institution?

To be eligible for an SSH room/apartment with campus contract, your education must be authorized. Please take a look at the Central Register of Education Programs (in Dutch: RIO-register). DUO keeps this lists updated.

For the SSH, you don't necessarily have to study
in the city where you're going to live.

How long does it take to get a Long Stay room?

That is a very logical question, to which unfortunately we cannot give a simple answer. It differs per city, per building and per type of living space. The longer you are registered, the bigger chance you have of receiving an invitation to an introduction evening or a viewing after you have responded to an advertisement in our rental offer. In order to give you an idea of the chances, we provide an indication of the required registration time on this page. Please note: our estimate is based on statistics of the past years. You can not derive any rights from it! It is possible - for example due to peak pressure in the summer and at the beginning of the academic year - that the final numbers are higher than the indication.

What's my registration time?

When you log in to ROOM or My SSH, go to 'My details' and 'Personal information'. There you will find your registration date and the number of weeks or months that you have been registered with us. In our rental offer, you will immediately see your position in comparison to the other students who respond to an ad. Please note that this position could change until the ad closes.

Have you transferred my registration time to ROOM?

Were you already registered with SSH before September 2024 and did you agree to transfer your details to the new registration platform? Then your registration period has been transferred to ROOM. If you were registered with both SSH and other participating student housing providers at that time, the longest registration period applied.

Can I transfer my registration to someone else?

No, unfortunately someone else is not allowed to take over your registration.

The extension of my registration, how does that work?

Eight years after the moment of registration with ROOM or the SSH, we will ask you whether we can delete your account, or whether you wish to extend your registration by one year. Clicking on a link in the mail will trigger the extension. If you extend your registration, we will send you the same email again one year later. On your ROOM or SSH account, you'll find your deletion date.

Can I delete my account?

You can delete your ROOM or SSH registration yourself by logging into your account and use the deletion button.

My ROOM registration is being deleted, but I am still an SSH tenant. What to do?

In principle, we will delete your data from SSH if your ROOM account is deleted, unless you are currently renting from us, have been a tenant in the past two years, have rent arrears, or are applying for accommodation. We are obliged to retain tenants' data for up to seven years after the last rental period.

I have a Short Stay registration. Can I add Long Stay to my Short Stay account?

Do you want to continue your stay in your city, or are you interested in living in other Dutch student cities? In that case, you can register with ROOM. You have to pay a one-time fee of €35,-. For ROOM, make sure to use the same email address as your SSH account.. If you register with ROOM while you already have a Short Stay registration with SSH, your registration date with SSH also applies to the Long Stay SSH offer. For other student housing providers, your registration date with ROOM applies.

I want to log in at My SSH after registering. How does that work?

Once you have registered with ROOM and entered your email address on the SSH website login page, we will first ask you to enter your password on ROOM.nl. You will then be automatically redirected to My SSH. If you only have an SSH account, you will be given the option to enter your password directly on the login page of the SSH website. In that case, you will not log in via ROOM.
