Preparation for your arrival

This article only applies to Short Stay. Click here to find more information about the difference between Long Stay and Short Stay housing.

What can I expect from living with the SSH?

When you booked your room, you chose a non-profit housing agency: the SSH. As a woningcorporatie, we provide affordable housing for students and others who need it, following Dutch government regulations. Unlike a hotel or hostel, the SSH operates as a housing agency, which means:

  • Arrival: you can only arrive during designated time slots within business hours if you have a physical key to pick up.
  • Response times: non-urgent inquiries may take a few days for us to respond. In case of emergency repairs, we have a 24/7 service available.
  • No reception: our buildings do not have reception desks, though some have caretaker offices. However, caretakers manage multiple buildings and are not always on-site. This means you cannot leave your luggage behind before getting your keys. This also means that if you have a question, you need to contact the SSH via one of the available channels or make an appointment. For urgent issues like fire or power outages, our 24/7 repair service is available. For non-urgent matters, you can reach us during office hours.

How can I prepare for my arrival?

Once you have booked a room with us, you will receive a (digital) key from us once your contract starts and you’ll need to return your keys once your contract ends. The room you have booked is furnished, so you need to bring (maybe a few) suitcases with personal stuff. Sounds easy, right? However, there’s more to it. Therefore, make sure to familiarize yourself with the following information before you arrive:

Step 1: key appointment and arrival location.
Plan your arrival and key pick-up within the designated timeslots. You can do this via My SSH under the My arrival tab. On this page you can see where your key pick-up appointment is

Step 2: familiarize yourself with your accommodation.
Please go to My SSH (tab 'My accommodation') for your accommodation details (e.g., inventory form and list, internet, laundry facility, garbage disposal, lock-outs)

Step 3: prepare yourself for the (first) upcoming rental payment
Your first rental payment depends on your accommodation type and the length of your stay. For example, exchange students often pay for all remaining months upfront. Please read our Help Center carefully to know what to expect.

Step 4: print your rental agreement
If you’re staying for longer than three months in the Netherlands, it’s mandatory to register with the municipality. In order to do so, you need to bring a physical copy of your rental agreement. Make sure to print it prior to your arrival.

Step 5:  familiarize yourself with the house rules
House rules can be read in your terms and conditions, which you can find in My SSH (tab 'My documents'). On this Help Center page, we have highlighted the most important house rules

What's my address?

You might want to use your SSH address for any preparations. Your SSH address is at the first page of your rental agreement. You can find your rental agreement on My SSH, tab 'My documents'. Here's a clear format for writing addresses in the Netherlands:

Recipient namePiet Janssen
Street name + house number + room number (if applicable)Kerklaan 22 k3
Postal code + city1234 PW Groningen

If applicable, your room number is indicated by the letter ‘k’. In the example above, your room number is 3. The address stated in your rental agreement is also the address you can use to deliver mail and packages. Please note that you cannot send packages to this address before the start date of your rental agreement.

Do I need to bring bed sheets?

We provide a bedding package which consists of a duvet, pillow, covers and fitted sheet (please note: no towels!). You can order the bedding package while finalizing the booking of your room. In case you are interested in booking a package but did not buy one while finalizing your booking, you can order this yourself via My SSH. This is possible up to four weeks prior to the start date of your rental agreement. Within four weeks before the start of the rental agreement, we have to order the packages with our supplier, so we are not able to add them to your booking anymore. In that case, it is best to get a set yourself when you arrive. There are multiple shops that have these items on offer for rather similar prices (Action, HEMA, IKEA etc.). You'll find the exact size of your bed in the inventory list which is on My SSH, tab 'My accommodation'.

What are the sizes of the bed and package?

In most of our short stay rooms, we have a standard single bed. The mattress is 80 cm x 200 cm. The bedding package is also the standard size: the pillow is 60 cm x 70 cm and the duvet is 140 cm x 200 cm.

What kind of inventory is in my room?

At My SSH, tab 'My accommodation', you'll find an inventory list where you can see what's included in your accommodation and kitchen. Besides that, you'll find information about washing machines, garbage disposal, the bike shed etc.

Who are my future housemates?

You can share your contact details via My SSH, under the 'My accommodation' tab. You will only be able to see the contact information of your future housemates if you agree to share yours as well. Four weeks before the start date of your rental agreement, your housemates' contact details will become visible.
